49. Why are our schools so dull and dreary?

Yesterday, I went to cast my vote at a local school – something I’ve done every election. And once again, I found myself walking through corridors that felt old, cold, and uninspiring.

It struck me how drastically these school environments differ from today’s modern offices, which are often filled with natural light, ergonomic furniture, artwork, and thoughtful design. While adults get to work in refreshed and energising spaces, our children – who spend over a decade of their lives in school – are left in buildings that feel stuck in the past.

This isn’t just about paint on the walls or new desks. The environment a child grows up in has a deep impact on their mood, motivation, and mental health. Combine these lifeless spaces with overworked or disengaged teachers, underfunded programs, and the emotional challenges many kids face at home, and it becomes clear that we are setting up the next generation in conditions far less nurturing than they deserve.

What if we flipped the script?

Imagine schools more beautiful than offices, homes, or even hospitals – vibrant with colour, filled with light, surrounded by gardens and fountains. Places that inspire creativity and joy the moment a child steps in.

A well-designed space won’t fix everything, but it’s a powerful foundation. Our kids should feel they are growing up in a world that values them – starting with the buildings we place them in every day.
