29. My first graphic design work with Affinity

Today, I learned graphic design and created this design!

Total time taken: 2-3 hours

How did I do it?

  1. I bought this 2 software: Affinity Publisher & Affinity Designer.
  2. Then, I followed every step (well almost!) of this YouTube tutorial from Envato Tuts+. It runs for about 80 minutes.

What an experience! Loved it.

It’s been years I’ve been wanting to learn graphic design, perhaps around 2017, but never gotten around to it.

When I was first considering my study in Australia, I was a bit stuck with what I should be studying! While in my final years of school in India, I had these options – Medicine, Engineering, Science, Commerce, Computing, Arts and Law. I wasn’t getting engineering because I hadn’t taken Maths. I wasn’t that interested in commerce or law either. And I didn’t know you could have a career in arts! I was slightly keen on computing but I couldn’t visualise what kind of job I would do with that education. So, I was left with medicine and science. I got into both, but chose the latter, aiming to specialise in biological sciences. I felt medicine was too difficult for me.

When I first met an Australian education agent, he listened to me and suggested I take up graphic designing! But I had no idea what it was and hence opted not to take it 🙁

Now, after decades of life/work experience, I feel life has come back a circle with me now pursuing both computer coding and graphic design!!

I have been using Canva for a long time but I knew if I wanted to design complicated projects like print a book/magazine, design a t-shirt or create marketing brochures, I would need to use a high-end software. Obviously, the only options then were Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I couldn’t afford them at all due to their very high subscription prices. Luckily, Affinity by Sans Serif came to the rescue! They are as good as Adobe products and they charge a one-time fee only! Perfect.

My hope is that I work on my graphic design skills every week if not every day. My aim is work on different challenges to hone my skills by watching YouTube and other online courses. I shall share my work as I finish them.

Wish me luck!
